CPAC: ALL WORK AND NO PLAY...
when a multi-ring circus is not enough and you can't just get by with the conspiracy comedy of glenn beck or the anti-semitic musical stylings of crooner, neo-nazi sebastion gorka (think a heavier stephen miller with better hair), what better way to entertain the horde of conservative whisperers (that's a walking dead reference for the uninitiated) than presenting a an adapted staging of "FBI Lovebirds", a play written by phelim mcaleer (that has to be an anagram, like mnuchin). mcaleer describes the play, based on texts between fbi lovers peter strzok and lisa page exchanged during the 2016 campaign and revealed during the mueller investigation, as "...a tragic love story that was an international political drama....And on top of that you've got Donald Trump." donald trump on top? in a love story about two people? now that's an image (i think i just threw up in my mouth a little) i didn't really need.
the play, which here starred dean cain, noted for playing superman on t.v. and being a frequent guest on fox, and kristy swanson, the original buffy the vampire slayer in the movie, is looked at by conservatives as a dramatization of proof that there was a 'deep state' conspiracy within the justice department and the fbi in particular that was intent on sabotaging the campaign of then presidential candidate trump. both were removed from their posts in 2018 (he was fired, she 'left'), even though investigations proved there was no concerted conspiracy in the doj/fbi which of course was only, in republican minds, proof that there WAS a conspiracy.
the actors both seemed to enjoy the dramatic reading of the lovers texts, using long pauses for dramatic effect, having fun announcing the emoticons ("wink", "smiley face"), acronyms like "OMG", even exclamation marks used in the original texts. the audience seemed to get into it with laughter and a smattering of applause, but the energy seemed to fade over time, maybe because the texts didn't live up to their expectations. after all, shouldn't texts between lover be a little more steamy? shouldn't there be more intrigue with a supposed plot concerning a presidential candidate involved? or maybe it was the image of donald on top that put them off.
in a q-and-a that followed the performance cain said that, though he thinks strzok and page felt they were doing something "heroic", "in the best interest of the country", it was "unconstitutional" and swanson said she felt they were 'arrogant'. they also revealed that prior to their performance they had a meeting at the white house with, well, who else? as supporters one can only assume that their reactions when they met were not acting. the author also revealed that they are trying to raise funds to stage the play for a few weeks in new york, i'm guessing somewhere off-off-off-off broadway.
thank you, but i'll wait for the movie. i'm sure i'll be able to find it in the sale bin at my local dollar store...next to pieces from ivanka's clothing line.
