well, well, well. when the ball starts rolling.....
kim davis, the county clerk who's been in the headlines for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples in rowan county, kentucky has finally had her day in court. while her supporters outside the courthouse cried about the perceived injustices she's been subjected to and threw insults, names and god-inspired condemnations at those there to witness her symbolic-beheading, the judge inside, one david bunning, who was ironically put into his position by a certain president 'w', set about rewarding her continued refusals to actually do her job with a jail sentence for contempt of court.
what, no bail? no fine? the judges reasoning there was that they would serve no useful purpose since they would more than likely be paid by her supporters, also to be referred to as her 'faithful flock', so with nothing actually coming out of her pocket where's the lesson to be learned? nope. it's the slammer. the hoosegow. the pokey. 'three hots and a cot' until she agrees to start signing those marriage licenses to those who are eligible to apply for them and that means EVERYBODY. i'd really like to think of her being led away in shackles, the great iron ball chained to her ankle being dragged behind her but, no, only in my fondest dreams.
meanwhile, outside, the news of the judge's actions is, of course, met with mixed reactions. those on the side of the madam lefarges in attendance, cackling 'guillotine! guillotine!' while knitting rainbow mufflers, set about applauding and cheering, patting the backs of the couples who should soon be able to get those golden certificates, the house now having been dropped on the wicked witch of rowan county. close by, kim's flying monkeys raised their voices in cries of despair, some even falling to their knees. lifting outstretched hands to heaven asking 'why? why? where did we go wrong? wasn't our disdain strong enough? didn't we hate the right people? GIVE US A SIGN!!!!' all in all, possibly just another day except for maybe an increase in the number of preachers screaming about fornicators and damnation. i say 'possibly' because never having been there (and hoping to god i never do) i really couldn't say for certain. i do feel i can be fairly positive the town has never seen so many rainbow placards, banners and buttons and, until this kerfuffle has waved it's final fuffle, will never see their like again.
now, as to the matter of it being finally over, that matter was on the verge of being resolved after only a few hours. kim's lawyers approached the judge with the proposal that kim be released from jail if she would promise that in doing so she would not interfere with the clerks in her office issuing marriage licenses to anybody, including same-sex couples. but since, apparently the only one she can make a promise to and mean it is god, she declined the deal, opting to return to jail. now THAT'S commitment! or she really, REALLY liked the bologna sandwiches. besides, now being given the chance to stage a hunger strike only increases her martyr-cred and just think of how they'll be able to play it out in the movie.
SCENE: kim kneels on the cell floor, the light streaming through the barred window onto her tear-streaked face. folding her hands in front of her, she slowly raises them above her head, then splays them in a sign of victory. drained, she collapses to the floor as guards enter her cell and drag her away as she cries 'thy will be done!' CUT. PRINT. as the crew breaks into sobs and applause crying 'OSCAR! OSCAR!'
can't you just see it'? and, in the role of his life, kirk cameron has never looked better.
with this in mind, i can't help but feel a modicum of sympathy for the woman....but, don't worry. i'll get over it. not that i believe much of anything she's said in her defense, i tend to believe that she was doing this in the beginning as an attempt to follow her supposed conscience. but once she appeared on t.v. for the first time, her liberty lawyers saw in her their next poster child for their 'war on christianity'. there she was all make-up free with her unkempt (i was tempted to say 'tousled' but it really looks way beyond tousled. closer to 'unclean') hair and k-mart wardrobe creating the image of a prairie preachers devoted wife. one need not stretch ones imagination to envision her barefoot and pregnant in front of a wood-burning stove. plus she looks like someone who can be easily manipulated. just what they need. and now they can represent her every scripted appearance while hauling away a hefty percentage of her fees. too bad her slightly sordid past had to come to light. the facts revealed that five months after (or it may have been before) her marriage to her first husband she gave birth to a kid(s) who were actually fathered by the man who would become her third husband, but were then adopted by her second husband (that must be some father's day!!). now, she's married to her fourth husband who was her 2nd husband....i think. let's just say she was married to one of them twice. this sent them into damage control but they white-washed it by saying that since she accepted jesus four years ago she's been '(white-)washed clean and her past doesn't in any way mean she's being a hypocrite by being such a pompous, self-righteous, sanctimonious and judgmental bi.....
since her final appearance (she was not there for the discussion of the plea deal), her assistants have agreed that it will be business as usual since they were only following her example out of fear and intimidation. well, that's all except one...nathan davis, who just happens to be, yep, mommy kim's little boy.
since kim was an elected official and couldn't be fired, that won't be a problem with little nate since he was hired by mommy should he choose to use mother as an example and follow in her footsteps, the axe can fall. as for kim. she continues to say she will not step down because, as she puts it, if she did she would 'no longer have a platform'. i'm pretty sure she meant pulpit. but i'm fairly certain 'pulpit' is not part of her job description.
so that's where the drama stands for the moment but i'm sure there's more to come. i wouldn't expect a visit from trump; she's just not attractive enough. a photo-op with uncle huckabuck is a possibility since the duggars were often pictured by his side and, after all, she's not accused of diddling any relatives....yet. and then there's the in-depth interview with meghan kelly. think of the ratings from all those hard-hitting questions.
stay tuned. as long as you've got a strong stomach, or a good supply of prilosec.
UPDATE: just heard paul and hucklebuck have come out on her side with uncle mikey say we have to stop with the 'continued criminalization of christianity'. smfh.
