a brief note on walking the dog.

warning! the following is not for the sensitive.  i just got in from walking the dog.  for the most part, it is usually a pleasant 20 to 30 minutes, unless, of course it's raining or the temperature has fallen umpteen degrees below zero.  today was cool but sunny, so, all in all, a nice little walk.  but in the middle of it all, a thought sprung to mind.  it must have been a slow day for thoughts, but there it was.  why does a dog take so long to do his business?  not number one, but number two.  he walks around and does what i call check his email.  every few feet, in some cases inches, sniffsniffsniff.  some necessitate a reply, others just a brief sniffsniffsniff.  and then there are the bushes, posts, poles, rocks, clumps of snow, weeds...and those little plastic flags used to mark utility/cable/any line that runs underground.  each requires it's own anointing.  but when it comes to LE GRANDE DUMP, only apparently, the perfect spot will do.  there's a cat in the house and she takes care of business, covers it up and is gone.  when it's my turn, i take nothing with me, no book no newspaper, and, especially, no phone.  i mean some things must remain private.  but dogs must feel the need to find just the right place to take a dump.  one patch of grass is just like another, isn't it?  maybe not.  like i said, a slow day for thoughts, but, for some reason this felt like it demanded discussion.  so, if you can shed any light on this topic, i have to walk the dog in about another 5 hours.

  1. May the sniffing and what-not is sort of a dump foreplay - getting them in the right mood to make a deposit?
