it's all over and done with.
well, kind of.
there's the announcement of the name.
then, we'll have the christening.
after that, it's the first steps, playing with the dog, off to school and then, perhaps even a brother or sister on the way and then...WE'RE OFF AGAIN!!
jon oliver did a brilliant riff on this, commenting that with the birth of the baby and now attention being turned to all the trivia surrounding it, apparently the media has gone on paternity leave. while i am an admitted anglophile and fan of the royal family (okay, i can hear the comments already) and agree that this is an historic moment, even i think things have gone a little, shall we say, bonkers. after all, it's just a baby.
but, really, i'd rather be hearing all the news about the new nursery, the layette, will or won't the duchess breast feed, than hear another 10-second blurb about the continuing melt-down of amanda bynes. and i NEVER heard of this one before all the selfies in the neon wigs and videos of this strange woman/girl walking bizarrely through the streets of hollywood, tweeting insults to molly cyrus. or hearing of her throwing a bong (or was it a vase?) out of the window of a new york hotel. once is a curious "WTF" moment. after months, it's become "WHO THE FUCK CARES?" we've gone through charlie sheen, britney spears, lindsey lohan, all the while having their behaviors analyzed by dr. drew and dr. phil. some get better (sort of) while others continue on the merry-go-round and all the while, the "paps" (paparazzi. i call them by their first name. yeah. we're close) follow, chase, enrage, encite, record and post. and why? because we're out there to buy this crap, for some reason enthralled by the drought-stricken greener grass on the other side of the fence. or maybe we just seek to tell ourselves we're so much better than the over-paid, over-indulged while secretly wishing for a fraction of what they have.
so, like i said, better more of the baby than the other shit that we're bombarded with by talking faces calling it "news". it's just on a bigger, more well-appointed stage with (somewhat) prettier players. but, like with all splashy, block-buster productions, there's always a kernel, a nugget, a little tiny piece that everyone can relate to, and can make us smile and go "awwww!"
i do have to insert a little bit of a political note....of all those out there complaining "enough's enough!", "it's just a baby!", i can't help but wonder how many are sitting in their craft rooms, magic markers in hand, getting their signs ready to stand on a local street corner to protest against abortion. after all, now that it's born, it's "just a baby".
